Possession was roughly equal with Modena creating 11 shots on goal to Ascoli’s eight.
The game’s only goal came from Luca Strizzolo in the 60th minute when from outside the box he hit Jacopo Manconi’s layoff on the volley into the bottom-left corner.
Things went from bad to worse for Ascoli when Danilo Quaranta got a red card in the eighth minute of second half added time for a foul as last man.
Ascoli have lost both of their opening matches.
