Zuppi was speaking at a prayer vigil dubbed ‘Dying of Hope’ in Santa Maria in Trastevere, in memory of the migrants who have died on perilous voyages to Europe like the hundreds who perished off Greece last week.
“We must never accept that the very human and responsible law of the sea, the rule of humanity whereby anyone in danger is rescued and cared for, should ever be questioned.
“They are in danger, and they must be saved,” Zuppi, who is also Ukraine peace papal envoy, said.
He said without legality, officials are accomplices to migrant trafficking, said.
The cardinal blasted the “scandal and disgrace over such huge suffering” and called for “an urgent choice, in order to finally choose a system of protection and safe reception for all, a legal system, because only with legality can you fight illegality, and if you don’t give legality you become accomplices in the criminal exploitation of people”.
