Ghedini, aged 62, had long been receiving treatment for a form of leukemia with which he was diagnosed, and had undergone a bone marrow transplant at the San Raffaele hospital in recent months.
However, it appeared that his death occurred due to an ulterior complication, pneumonia, likely contracted due to his particularly fragile state as an immunocompromised patient.
“Our Niccolò has left us. It does not seem possible to us but unfortunately it is so. Our pain is great, immense, we can hardly believe it: three days ago, we were still working together. What can we say about him? A great, dear friend, an exceptional professional, cultured and very intelligent, infinitely generous. We will miss you immensely, and wonder how we will manage without you,” said FI leader Silvio Berlusconi in a tribute published to his Facebook profile.
