Despite only having 43 per cent possession, Lazio created eight chances to the home side’s six.

Plzen thought they were ahead in the 11th minute, but Pavel Sulc’s volley on the turn was ruled out for offside.

Seven minutes later, Lazio broke the deadlock for real with a header from point-blank range by Alessio Romagnoli following a corner.

Rafiu Durosinmi equalised for Plzen shortly after the break when he headed in Lukas Kalvach’s expertly taken freekick into the box.

Things were made difficult for Lazio in the 77th minute as Nicolo Rovella’s yellow card was swapped for a straight red, after the referee checked the VAR monitor, for kicking Sulc in the face.

It went from bad to worse for the visitors when Samuel Gigot was also shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle.

Somehow, with just nine men, Lazio scored the winner in the 98th minute thanks to a worldclass strike into the far post by Gustav Isaksen from the corner of the box.

They now bring the lead back to the Stadio Olimpico next week.
