Morrison on Sunday night announced a new stage of restrictions, with the government advising against indoor or outdoor gatherings of more than two people.

The prime minister said it would be up to the states and territories to legally enforce the new measure, but NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian quickly confirmed her state would be policing the changes.

Berejiklian said she appreciates the measures are “frustrating” but people need to follow them for the good of the community.

The tougher restrictions come despite the number of new coronavirus infections in NSW having dropped for two days in a row.

NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant has revealed 127 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in NSW as of 8:00 pm on Sunday.

That comes after there were 174 new cases on Saturday, and 212 the day before.

Chant said it was “pleasing we’ve seen a stabilisation of case numbers” but it’s the long term trend that is important.

There are now 1918 cases of coronavirus and eight deaths in NSW.

Of the confirmed cases, 1185 have been acquired overseas.

Twenty-six coronavirus patients are in intensive care, with 13 on ventilators.

We are now in a position now that allows us to control the spread as much as possible,” Berejiklian said.

The Premier said it was essential anyone over the age of 70 did not leave their house except for exercise and those who needed supplies could contact the NSW coronavirus helpline.

She also urged those aged between 20 and 30 to “think of others” and said the demographic were “the worst offenders” when it came to adhering to restrictions.
