“We had an open and long meeting,” she told presenter Maria Bartiromo during an interview for the right-wing news channel from Washington on Sunday.
“We spoke at length at a time in which the things around us are seeming to change.
“There were bilateral issues, but we also talked about global crises.
“It was a very good discussion, and I’m very happy.”
When asked whether anything has changed regarding Biden’s initial skepticism about her right-wing stances, Meloni was measured.
“I’m sure that something has changed, as has happened for other leaders in the world.
“I have been described as a monster, which I am not.”
She said that she was responding with concrete results to an opposition and media that have heavily criticised her as Italy’s furthest right government leader since WWII.
“There’s nothing I want to say to those who criticise me.
“The only way I like to respond is with results: we are growing more than other economies, we have a stable rate of employment, of female employment. Things are going well.”
During the interview, Meloni said Italy and other European countries must fight migrant traffickers in the Mediterranean.
“We must fight the traffickers,” she said.
“These organisations are becoming ever more powerful. We cannot let the mafia decide who arrives in our countries.”
