Three MPs from the Italian Left/Green group, Ilaria Cucchi, Angelo Bonelli and Nicola Fratoianni, filed a petition at the weekend.
The opening of an investigation is standard procedure; however, the concerns of the petition are anything but.
They called on prosecutors to check whether there had been "ministerial provisions preventing the Coast Guard from going out to sea" to save the shipwreck victims.
On Saturday Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni dismissed speculation that her government may have in some way impeded operations that would have saved the victims.
"Can there really be anyone who, in good conscience, thinks that the government deliberately let 60 people die?" Meloni asked reporters during her visit to Abu Dhabi.
"Please, let's be serious."
Prosecutors in Crotone have also opened a probe into the disaster, including into whether rescue operations were negligently delayed.
The government has staunchly defended the coast guard, which has said it followed protocol during its handling of the event.
