The work, currently on show Thursday and Friday in the Milan branch of the auction house, is one of the 38 space concept paintings in his famed End of God series.

It is one of only five in white, two of which are still in private hands while the other two are in the permanent collections of the Prada Foundation in Milan and Tokyo’s contemporary art museum.

The piece has been valued at USD $18-22 million.

It is the first time in five years that an End of God piece has appeared on the market and the first since 2004 for a white version.

“It’s a masterpiece of one of the greatest series that Lucio Fontana ever executed,” said Claudia Dwek, Sotheby’s European contemporary art expert.

“Works of this kind only arrive rarely on the market and are considered fundamental for Fontana collectors and for Italian postwar art.”
