Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Senate Speaker Pietro Grasso attended a ceremony at the Palermo bunker-courthouse that housed the Maxiprocesso, or Maxi Trial, against Sicily’s Cosa Nostra mafia in the 1980s and early 1990s.

The Maxi Trial was the biggest crackdown on organised crime in Sicily and put many mafia bosses and associates behind bars.

Sadly, it also sentenced Falcone to death, and he was murdered by the mafia on May 23, 1992.

His close friend and colleague, Paolo Borsellino, was also killed by the mafia in a bomb attack in July 1992, along with five policemen.
