“The Democratic Party has gone to the far left, now they’re competing directly with Cinque Stelle to attract the smaller parties of the radical left,” Renzi said.

“There are now two different paths before us.”

Renzi congratulated his new adversary before referencing her party’s problems of late.

“Well done to Elly Schlein, do your work your way and we’ll do it our way, with a smile and without the daily infighting of the Democratic Party.”

He believes the current political climate bodes well for his party with next year’s European parliament election in his sights.

“If we have a good campaign, if the left continues to radicalise itself, if the government continues to not give answers but only slogans on immigration, on growth, on education, then I think we have the opportunity to do very well,” Renzi said.
