Renzi was accompanied by Amatrice's mayor Sergio Pirozzi, and greeted firefighters and police upon arrival.

The premier was also accompanied by Reconstruction Commissioner Vasco Errani, Civil Protection chief Fabrizio Curcio and Cabinet Secretary Claudio De Vincenti.

During his visit, Renzi assured mayors from the devastated zones that Italy is stronger than earthquakes and can recover from them if everyone comes together as one.

"Where there is a strong presence of the community, the reaction is strong and beautiful," Renzi said.

"If we don't split, if there are no polemics or rows, things can be done well, otherwise it'll take longer. Italy is stronger than these events. Let's act like a team."
