ISTAT said the drop comes as a result of changes to the tax and benefits system.

Overall inequality in the distribution of disposable income assessed through the ‘Gini index’ also fell slightly, from 31.9 per cent to 31.7 per cent, added the national statistics agency in its report on income redistribution in Italy.

The improvements are attributable primarily to changes to child benefits, citizenship income, the introduction of training and employment support (SFL) and the partial exemption of social security contributions for employees, ISTAT said.
