Repubblica was closed last year after an escalator in the station malfunctioned and ran out of control on October 23, injuring more than 20 people.

Many of the victims were Russian football fans heading to a Champions League match between AS Roma and CSKA Moscow.

Footage of the incident went viral in the following days.

The footage showed passengers panicking before being crushed at the bottom of the escalator as the stairs crumpled.

Some people became tangled in the end of the walkway, with one person reported to have lost a foot.

The escalator in question at Repubblica remains closed even now, with four of the station’s six walkways in operation.

Workers have reportedly spent the past eight months carrying out preventative maintenance on the other escalators at risk rather than repairing the broken one.
