Stand-out fly-half Paolo Garbisi said the victory was “beautiful and courageous”.
Garbisi contributed to Italy’s 26-19 victory with his precise free kicks and the conversions for both tries, and the Azzurro commented with satisfaction on the team’s performance.
“It was a strong Italy from the first minute,” he said.
“It was something we had set out to do from the start,” added Toulon’s fly-half, “We wanted to start well.
“We lost possession a bit towards the end of the first half, giving them a few more opportunities, which, like a great team, they capitalised on—but we managed to stay in the lead throughout.
“We made the most of our numerical superiority in the second half and did a good job defensively, holding off the Australian attack.
“It was a courageous Italy side, quite precise with a lot of heart, but with a few things to work on for the next match.”
The Italians travelled from Udine to Turin by train yesterday to begin preparations for their second test match of November against South Africa on Saturday.
