“To cut a long story short, I got back from Rome on Sunday night after finishing The Masked Singer and I fell down the stairs, a horrible fall, anyone else would have killed themselves,” the 83-year-old told her fans in a video she posted on social media, from her sick bed at home on Wednesday.

“They wanted to take me to hospital, but I decided to stay at home. I'm to stay bedridden for three or four days.

"I had some X-rays done and they probably found microfractures, if I have to I'll go back to hospital,” the Eagle of Ligonchio said.

Zanicchi won the Sanremo song festival in 1967 with Non pensare a me, in 1969 with Zingara and again in 1974 with Ciao cara, come stai?.

She remains the only woman singer to have won that festival's prize three times.

From 1987 to 2000 Zanicchi hosted the television game show OK, il Prezzo è Giusto!, the Italian version of The Price Is Right as the only female host in the history of the game show worldwide (since then, other countries have had versions of the show hosted by a woman).

She is a two-term MEP for Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party.

Zanicchi raised eyebrows while a contestant on Dancing with the Stars last year by saying she still enjoyed making love.
