“I had a terrible summer, thinking about the last match of the European Championships,” Spalletti told a press conference at the national team’s base near Florence.

He was speaking ahead of the upcoming Nations League matches against France and Israel.

“I feel responsible for what happened,” he said.

“The players are totally exempt from these responsibilities, as I told them today.

“I put too much pressure on them, I did not give them time to enjoy wearing the Azzurri jersey.

“Now I have to be the first one to change.”

Meanwhile, Spalletti’s former player and Napoli’s want-away Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen could move to Turkish champions Galatasaray on a year-long loan, Turkish media said on Monday.

The 25-year-old was the top-scorer in the Napoli’s 2022-23 title-winning campaign, but he has fallen out with the club.

The Naples side brought in Romelu Lukaku as a replacement and dropped Osimhen from the squad after the summer transfer markets in most top leagues closed without a move materialising.

But the transfer market in Turkey is still open until September 13 and Galatasaray are looking to reinforce their attack after Mauro Icardi suffered an injury.
