"Tougher punishments are needed, not just from us, but also from the judges," Gravina said in reference to recent episodes of violence and racism in Italian football.
"Those identified by the police (as responsible) for acts of violence cannot get away with an hour or a day of detention and then a stadium ban.
"As far as we are concerned, the stadium ban is not longer enough.
"Stronger penalties are needed that truly punish these criminals".
The recent acts of violence linked to Italian football include a mass brawl on a motorway between Napoli and AS Roma fans that has led to the teams' supporters being banned from away matches for two months.
