Breathtaking aerial footage has been released showing the path and its unrivalled panoramic views.

It will be 140 kilometres long and will traverse three northern Italian regions: Trentino, Lombardy and Veneto.

According to local media, the track has already been called Europe’s most beautiful bike ride, and it’s not even finished yet.

The route is built into cliffs surrounding Italy’s largest lake, and in some places even skims the surface of the water.

The path’s creators want to give cyclists the sensation of “flying” over the lake.

It is also hoped the track will boost the country’s growing bike tourism industry – which already draws around 220,000 visitors to the country each year –  and take visitors to less well-known villages around the lake.

While the path has been built to suit cyclists of all levels, some tougher areas with considerable inclines can be avoided by taking a boat on the lake.

Some parts of the track are already completed, but it is expected to be fully finished by 2021, at a total cost of €102 million.
