It was the Varese-born 23-year-old's second gold after previously winning the 100m breaststroke, raising Italy's current gold haul to a total of eleven. Another Azzurro, Simone Cerasuolo, came second, while Germany's Lucas Matzerath was awarded bronze.

Italy also took home the gold and the bronze in the women's 1m springboard at the championships, with Milan-born Elena Bertocchi, 27, repeating the success of Budapest, 2020, where she also won the event. Chiara Pellacani, a 19-year-old from Rome, came third, while Sweden's Emma Gullstrand followed, winning silver.

The Italians are currently at the top of championship’s scoreboard, with eleven gold medals under their belt and an expected twelfth on the way with star swimmer Gregorio Paltrinieri set to compete in the 1500m freestyle tonight, having won the 800m event over the weekend.

The Italian gold-medal tally also includes two wins from Simona Quadarella in the women's 800m and 1500m freestyle. With two days of the championships left to go, celebrations for the Azzurri are sure to continue.
