"It is necessary to try to convince Russia to ... sit around a table to negotiate a peaceful solution to the crisis in Ukraine," Tajani told Mediaset TV.
"Naturally, as far as we are concerned, peace means a peace that does not feature Ukraine's defeat but the withdrawal of Russian troops.
"We absolutely want to avert any risk, including a hypothetical one, of the use of nuclear weapons, even if tactical and therefore limited to some areas, because it would be a disaster."
Rome has staunchly supported Kyiv since Moscow's invasion a year ago, including via the provision of military aid.
