“Sport is an excellent tool for peace,” Tajani said as he met Cocciaretto at the foreign ministry in Rome on Monday.

Cocciaretto, who is also studying law away from the tennis court, was thrilled to accept the honour.

“This recognition fills me with joy,” she said.

“It is an award for the sacrifices I have made and for the course of study I have undertaken,” she said at the announcement ceremony.

“I will support the sporting name of Italy internationally, it is an honour and a pleasure to have received it.”

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs promotes sports diplomacy through its network of foreign missions and via constant cooperation with sports federations.

The ministry said integrated promotional activities organised around major international competitions make it possible to enhance the link between sport and other Italian areas of excellence.
