The man, in his 80s, died today at the North West Regional Hospital.

It takes the state’s death toll to three, after two elderly people died from the virus late last month.

It comes as Tasmania has banned visitors from all hospitals and aged care centres to protect the state’s most vulnerable amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Exemptions will be made for births, care of a dependent child, on compassionate grounds and for visiting people at the end of their life.

The rules will initially be in place for two weeks, and reviewed after that.

Australia’s death toll now stands at 46.
