Italy's Matteo Berrettini qualified for the quarter-finals of the US Open over the weekend, beating Spain's Davidovich Fokina 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
The 26-year-old Roman will now face Norway's Casper Ruud in the last eight.
Fellow Italian Jannik Sinner is seeking to join Berrettini in the quarters.
Sinner now faces Belarusian Ilya Ivashka, after beating American Brandon Nakashima in the last round 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.
The elimination of Lorenzo Musetti has left only the Roman and the South Tyrolean carrying the tricolor to Flushing Meadows, but both are said to have the skill and strength to finish at least in the top four.
