Upon their arrival, the large Neapolitan family sparked widespread interest and were helped by the Italian and Australian governments in their search for a house and work, and with any initial expenses in their new home.

The family soon grew again, with the birth of a baby girl, who they named Elisabetta, after the Queen of England.

It’s not known whether the courageous parents are superstitious, or whether will try for number 17 (an unlucky number in Italy)!

But for the moment, here’s a photo of the current Esposito family, taken at their home in Sydney.

Carlo and Fortunata Esposito are holding baby Elisabetta and are surrounded by their other children: Carmela, Brigida, Luisa, Dora, Annamaria, Lisa, Antonietta, Rosaria, Susanna, Salvatore, Patrizia, Vincenzo, Antonio, Irma and Roma.
