Though the region’s vineyards and cellars are active all year long, the month of May takes on special importance as the weather warms up.
From May 30 to June 2, the town of Montespertoli will hold the 62nd edition of its annual wine festival, which is one of Italy’s oldest: the Mostra del Chianti.
Situated on the Florence side of the Chianti wine-making area, Montespertoli lies just 25 kilometres from the Tuscan capital, and is equidistant from the popular tourist destinations of Siena, Pisa, Volterra and San Gimignano.
The countryside surrounding Montespertoli is completely dedicated to grape growing, boasting the ideal climate and physical conditions.
Montespertoli is based on a culture of fine wine and good food.
Visitors to the town can explore local wine cellars, farms and oil presses and savour the exquisite flavours of the area.
At the end of May, foodies flock to the town’s Piazza del Popolo for the Mostra del Chianti, which aims to showcase the beauty of the region, which has been producing wine since ancient times, by combining tradition and innovation.
This year, festivalgoers will be dazzled by a town adorned with colourful blossoms as part of the side exhibition, ‘Montespertoli, a City of Flowers’.
Many events have been scheduled to entertain both children and adults alike, from live street performances to concerts and theatre shows.
A historical parade also takes place each year, in which locals re-enact daily scenes of the early ’900s that accurately represent the social and historical backdrop of a society based on agricultural customs and traditions.
Other events include a vintage car, motorcycle, and farm tractors rally.
There will also be lots of food and wine tasting ... The obvious highlight of the festival!
