Eleven Madison Park secured the title of The World’s Best Restaurant for the first time in history, knocking previous winner, Modenese chef Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana, down to second place.
Eleven Madison Park, housed in an art deco building which overlooks New York’s Madison Park, debuted on the list in 2010 at No.50, and has appeared within the top 10 since 2012, taking out No.3 last year.
The restaurant’s co-owners, Will Guidara and Swiss-born chef Daniel Humm, offer diners a multi-course seasonal tasting menu which embodies the city’s rich history and cuisine.
Despite slipping from top place to No.2, Modena’s Osteria Francescana retained its title as The Best Restaurant in Europe, ahead of Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca, which rounded out the top three.
Italy made its mark on the international stage with Piazza Duomo in Alba, Le Calandre in Rubano and Reale in Castel di Sangro, which ranked No.15, No.29 and No.43 respectively.
Two restaurants made Australia proud, with Melbourne’s Attica rising one place to No.32 to hold on to its title as The Best Restaurant in Australasia, and Brae in regional Victoria making its debut at No.44.
Celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal was the recipient of this year’s prestigious Diners Club® Lifetime Achievement Award, while his London restaurant Dinner by Heston Blumenthal jumped nine places to sit at No.36.
USA chef Dan Barber’s unique barn restaurant, Blue Hill at Stone Barns, leaped a mammoth 37 spots to No.11 to take out the Highest Climber Award.
Other winners include Ana Roš of Hiša Franko in Slovenia, who was named The World’s Best Female Chef for 2017, and Peruvian chef Virgilio Martínez, who won the Chefs’ Choice Award, voted in by his peers.
The prestigious list is determined by the votes of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, a prominent group of over 1000 international leaders in the restaurant community.
The panel in each region comprises food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and revered “gastronomes”.
Members of the panel list their favourite restaurants in order of preference, based on their dining experiences over the previous 18 months.
Group Editor of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, William Drew, said that the publication is proud to unite industry greats from across the globe in the annual celebration.
“All 50 restaurants represent the very best culinary experiences and talent,” Mr Drew said.
“We congratulate each one, as well as all the individual award winners, on their remarkable achievements, innovation and creative passion.”
