Tamberi was Italy’s male flag-bearer at the opening ceremony.
“We will have one more excuse, as you have always asked me, to renew our vows and get married again.”
He also apologised to his wife, Chiara Bontempi, after losing the ring while waving the flag during the parade on the Seine.
“I’m sorry my love, I’m so sorry,” he said.
“Too much water, too many kilos lost in the last few months or maybe the irrepressible enthusiasm of what we were doing.
“Probably all three.
“The fact remains that I felt it slip off.
“It will remain forever on the riverbed of the city of love.
“May it be a good omen to return home with a bigger gold.”
