Revived on the spot having gone into cardiac arrest, the boy was treated by 118 health workers and then transported by ambulance to the nearby Ss Annunziata hospital in code red.
His condition is said to be very serious.
Mayor of Chieti, Diego Ferrara, told reporters he had spoken to the head of the emergency room, Doctor Emanuele Tafurri.
“He told me the boy’s situation is critical,” Ferrara said.
“The little one is intubated and hasn’t regained consciousness”.
The mayor said it is highly likely he will be transferred to intensive care at the Pescara hospital.
“I feel the pain of this news strongly, not only as mayor, but also having 14-, 10- and 11-year-old grandchildren who play sports.
“I hope that the strong fibre of a 12-year-old will help to lift him out of his present condition.”
