The body of Gabriele Sorrentino, a financial worker and former Carabiniere, was found not far from his car at the bottom of a cliff that towers over the northern Italian city, where he is believed to have jumped from.
While Sorrentino left no note, the mother of the murdered siblings said that economic problems related to the purchase of a new house may have been linked to the tragedy.
"The main lead is linked to a motive of a financial type," Trento Assistant Prosecutor Pasquale Profiti confirmed.
"It was a sudden event, of which there had been no warnings signs."
Profiti added that relations between the husband and wife were "excellent”.
Sorrentino's wife came home to discover the murder of her children after leaving them in the care of their father.
