Giulio Alberto Pacchione, 28, from Teramo in Abruzzo, and Lorenzo Paroni, 30, from Montereale Valcellina in Friuli Venezia Giulia, fell to their deaths while climbing a vertical rock face in a rope team on Mount Mangart.
The pair were considered excellent mountaineers, and despite their ages, were very experienced climbers and cave rescuers.
The alarm was raised when they did not return to their barracks.
Following an extensive search operation, their bodies were found on Wednesday night, and the following morning transported by helicopter to Tarvisio where they worked together.
Both men were stationed in Tarvisio.
The cause of the accident is not yet known, but an investigation is already underway.
