The United States abstained in the vote amid Israeli ire.
“We hope there is a cease-fire [in Gaza] that permits the release of the Israeli hostages and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian civilian population,” he said.
“The ceasefire resolution was voted at the UN, it’s the first time and this makes us hope and it certainly represents a first positive step forward.
“I hope the negotiations for the release of the hostages may proceed rapidly and so we can look with more optimism to a less complicated situation that may then progressively lead to peace.”
