The visitors had a whopping 72 per cent possession but only managed two shots on target compared to Venezia’s five.
The home side took the lead in the 25th minute when Joel Pohjanpalo scored a penalty awarded when Catanzaro keeper Andrea Fulignati came for the ball but instead completely took out the legs of Mikael Ellertsson.
Andrea Ghion brought Catanzaro level five minutes before half time with an absolute rocket from outside the box that had too much power for a diving Bruno Bertinato.
Venezia restored their lead in first half added time with a driving run from Dennis Johnsen that resulted in a shot that should have been easily saved, but Fulignati’s attempt at a strong palm almost seemed to help the ball on its way into the goal.
Venezia sit second on the table while Catanzaro are in seventh place.
