The Venice executive council has approved the trial of a 5-euro ticket to enter the Lagoon city next year as part of efforts to stop it being constantly inundated by tourists.

The city council is set to vote on the proposal by the executive on September 12.
The trial would occur on 30 strategically-chosen days in 2024 when the number of visitors to the city is expected to be especially high, such as national holidays and weekends in spring and summer.
Residents, commuters, students, children under 14, people staying in the city overnight and people visiting for sporting events would be exempt from having to buy the ticket.
