Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton confirmed the death this morning on Twitter.

“Sadly, an additional death reported overnight in a man in his 80s. Seven patients remain in ICU,” he said.

Sutton also confirmed there are now 1085 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state, up 49 from Thursday.

He said there had been some flattening of the curve in the state but added that “we need to do more”.

“We have gone from doubling numbers every three or four days to doubling every seven days,” he said.

“It is an improvement.

“We don’t want to be doubling every seven days, we need to keep at it and flatten the curve.”

It comes as Victoria prepares for its first weekend since harsher social distancing laws were implemented.

After last weekend’s images of Victorians flocking to beaches when they had been told to stay home, Sutton announced tighter restrictions on Thursday.

Urging Victorians to stay home and save lives, he declared all recreational activities beyond basic exercise were not allowed.

Hobbies including fishing, hunting, boating, camping and golf have been banned.

“Hang up your rods, leave the tinnie in the driveway, and clean your clubs at home,” he said.

“These restrictions are tough, but they are there for a reason.

“If we don’t do this, Victorians will die.”
