The new case was in a 29-year-old man who had returned from overseas.
“Obviously it’s disappointing that our streak of zero cases has come to an end, however we always knew we would get more cases as people return from overseas or interstate,” Premier Mark McGowan said.
“The good news here is that we have systems in place to ensure any spread of the virus is limited.”
There are now nine active cases in Western Australia, the first time the state has reached single digits.
Of the nine current cases, four people are in hospital and one is in intensive care.
McGowan told media there were no plans to open the state’s borders after today’s National Cabinet meeting.
“I know there are some people, in the eastern states, who say we should bring down the borders with the east but we are frankly not listening to them,” he said.
McGowan said he expected Western Australia would have the opportunity to be “more economically progressive” than the eastern states as restrictions ease across the country, due to its relatively low infection rate.
“Western Australia, Northern Territory and South Australia are streets ahead of eastern states and territories,” he said.
McGowan said the state will work with today’s National Cabinet findings and will prioritise boosting the economy.
“Here in Western Australia we will do the best for our state,” he said.
“Steps will take time to implement and it won’t be overnight.”
An update on Western Australia’s next steps in lifting restrictions will be announced on Sunday.
