Bologna dominated the match with 68 per cent possession and 12 shots on goal to Empoli’s three.
Fabbian broke the deadlock in under two minutes as he met Sam Beukema’s flick on header at the back post for an easy finish.
Just over a minute later and the scores were level. Emmanuel Gyasi chested Giuseppe Pezzella’s inviting cross into the back of the net.
Empoli should have taken the lead eight minutes before the break, but Ola Solbakken’s effort from close range was tame and straight at Lukasz Skorupski in the Bologna goal.
Despite a plethora of chances for the home side, the goal they deserved never arrived.
After three games, Bologna find themselves towards the bottom of the table on two points, while are in seventh place with five.
