The invitation was extended during a telephone conversation between the two leaders on Monday night focusing on the recent events in Russia and the situation in Ukraine.
“The two leaders affirmed their support for Ukraine” ahead of the upcoming “NATO summit and discussed recent developments in North Africa”, the White House said, adding that the conversation took place “in the context of working closely with allies and partners after the recent events in Russia”.
On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani denied that Meloni had been snubbed by Biden after he failed to include her among the EU leaders he consulted with on the Russia crisis, insisting that the US had always had great consideration for Italy and that it recognised Rome’s role over Ukraine.
“There is always great consideration from the United States for the Italian government,” Tajani said on Rai3 current affairs show In mezz’ora.
“I remember (Secretary of State Antony) Blinken’s words of great recognition during my recent visit to Washington.”
“We are a great country,” Tajani added, “if Europe is standing firm in defence of Ukraine it is also thanks to the Italian government.
“The European system also stands thanks to our country,” he said.
