Luisa Zappitelli, who will turn 109 in November 8, hasn’t missed an election since she voted in the referendum on whether Italy should be a republic or a monarchy at the age of 35 on June 2, 1946.

Zappitelli encouraged Italian youth to vote.

“This is the way citizens have to make their voices to be heard in democracy,” she said.

“When I was young, women didn’t have the right to vote.

“I still remember the first time I went proudly to vote with other women, a moment that will remain forever in my mind.”

Zappitelli voted at 11:00 am on Monday, accompanied by her children Anna and Dario Ercolani, and her niece Natascia.
