A 39-year-old tram driver, who lives with his wife in the apartment building in which the murder occurred, was arrested on suspicion of murdering Jessica Valentina Foaro.

The suspect, identified as Alessandro Garlaschi, shed tears as he was arrested for questioning by police and made “partial admissions”, according to local sources.

Mr Garlaschi had reportedly told the building supervisor before his arrest that he’d “done something awful”.

Judicial sources described the evidence against Mr Garlaschi as “overwhelming”.

Police told the media that the suspect may have lost his temper and attacked Ms Foaro after she refused his advances, though the motive behind the murder has not yet been confirmed.

Neighbours and passersby shouted hateful remarks at Mr Garlaschi as he was arrested by police, including: “You’re a monster”, “damned killer” and “I hope you rot in jail”.

Ms Foaro's death comes just days after a man was arrested in the central Italian town of Macerata for the grisly murder of 18-year-old Pamela Mastropietro, whose remains were found in two suitcases.
