Italian Cinema Forum: ‘Il Divo’ by Paolo Sorrentino

Event by Editorial Team

Following the successful classic Italian cinema workshops run by Mark Nicholls at CO.AS.IT. in 2019, we are continuing the discussion with a series of six more recent classics. This talk will explore ‘Il Divo’ by Paolo Sorrentino. The mysterious and elusive Italian politician, Giulio Andreotti, always seems to exceed the limits of representation. This is the reason, as a subject for interrogation, he is so suitable for the frequently excessive cinema of Sorrentino. ‘Il Divo’ is a beautiful and rich, visually and aurally confronting film which raises as many questions about Andreotti, the potentate, as is settles long-standing Italian cultural and political scores. More controversial, however, is Sorrentino’s work and his substantial contribution to artistic debates over the way filmmakers can fruitfully engage with questions of high and low politics. Join us for, what promises to be, a lively debate as we workshop ideas of how a humble filmmaker can represent the unrepresentable. Mark Nicholls is Senior Lecturer in Cinema Studies at the University of Melbourne where he has taught film since 1993. Mark has worked as a film journalist for ABC Radio and ‘The Age’ and has a list of over 20 stage credits as a playwright, performer, producer and director. FREE EVENT. Registration required.
