Three Italian Regions and Their Wines: Friuli, Marche and Calabria

Event by Editorial Team

The Italian Cultural Institute is pleased to host once again Italian sommelier Piero Fonseca, who already in 2016 held a series of seminars on Italian wines at the Institute, on the occasion of the Second Week of the Italian Cuisine in the World, an event promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation which will be held between the 20th and the 26th of November 2017 in 130 countries all over the world. The event will see the participation of thousands of government and community organisations with the purpose of promoting Italy’s most renowned export in the world: the extraordinary Italian taste. The evening will be dedicated to the wines of three Italian regions: Friuli, Marche and Calabria, in order to cover the north, centre and south of the peninsula. During the event the participants will be able to sample some of the most celebrated wines of these regions. Piero Fonseca developed his knowledge of viticulture before the age of 18 as he assisted his father each summer during harvest on their family vineyard, Petreto. He joined his father in the cellar making several different varieties of wine and his love grew over the next seven years as he presented their wines at Italian wine shows including Vinitaly. Piero graduated from the University of Florence in 2012 with a Bachelor degree in Criminal Law, but during his university studies he continued pursuing his passion, broadening his knowledge of wine by attending master classes, winery tastings and also spending the summer of 2006 working in the wine industry in London. The Petreto winery won several awards at international wine shows in the USA and Spain, including the third price among all participants at the Spanish Vinoble in 2010. After having spent 16 years in Australia Piero became Head Sommelier at Balla Restaurant, and is currently working for an Australian company that imports food and wines from Italy.
