Ufuk, who is charged with aiding illegal immigration, culpable shipwreck and causing death as a consequence of another crime, is the only one of the alleged traffickers to have chosen a fast-track trial.
He was arrested in Austria in March after being among the 80 people to survive the disaster and fleeing from Italy.
The prime minister’s office is among the civil plaintiffs in the case and has requested one million euros in compensation.
Two other alleged traffickers, both Pakistani nationals, are also standing trial in relation to the disaster.
