“The richest five per cent of Italian households own about 46 per cent of the total net wealth,” stated the Bank of Italy’s analysis in the ECB framework.
The analysis also stated that “the main inequality indices remained substantially stable between 2017 and 2022, after having increased between 2010 and 2016”.
The study shows how less affluent households can rely mainly on home ownership while the more affluent ones hold a more diversified portfolio in shares, deposits and policies.
Italy is below the EU average in terms of wealth concentration, on par with France and behind Germany, which is “the country with the highest degree of inequality in terms of net wealth,” added the report.
The discrepancy with respect to the continent as a whole reflects the higher share of net wealth held in Italy by households below the median (linked above all to home ownership), the study explains.
