Netflix’s adaptation of acclaimed Italian author Elena Ferrante’s novel ‘The Lying Life of Adults’ has been given release date of January 4, 2023.

Directed and co-written by Neopolitan Edoardo De Angelis, a provocative poster and a teaser trailer for the show, based on the latest novel by the literary icon of ‘My Brilliant Friend Fame’, were released earlier this year.

The series stars Valeria Golino ('Rain Man', 'Hot Shots') in the role of the complicated Neapolitan aunt who the series’ young protagonist Giovanna, played by newcomer Giordana Marengo, becomes entangled with in the throes of adolescent angst.

Alessandro Preziosi plays Giovanna’s father, Andrea, while Pina Turco of ‘Gomorrah’ fame plays her mother, Nella.

Ferrante’s novel follows Giovanna’s coming of age during the 1990s, as she struggles to forge her identity in a Naples divided by class, torn between the refined posturing of the high-quarters where she has grown up, and the exciting grittiness of the low-quarters, where her fierce yet intriguing working class aunt Vittoria lives.

The highly anticipated six-part series is written by Ferrante herself, as well as Laura Paolucci, Francesco Piccolo and Edoardo De Angelis. It is produced by Fandango.

“To be ‘wrong’, disobedient, free and vulgar, it’s a role that to some extent is very distant (from me), but which lit up my curiosity, just as when I read the book,” said Naples-born actress Golino of her portrayal of aunt Vittoria.

“I prepared an awful lot, perhaps for the first time, starting with the language (which includes Neapolitan dialect), because I felt a sense of anxiety. But Edoardo De Angelis is the calmest director I’ve worked with, he never sets off any alarms,” she continued.

“Ferrante’s words are very beautiful, and opening them up to grasp what lies inside them has been interesting,” said director De Angelis.

“Adapting a novel is not complicated, it’s like reading it. When I read I project certain images into my mind, and that’s why we sometimes have different ideas regarding what we see on the screen.”
