The re-enactment of the Passion of Christ will take place on Palm Sunday, March 29 at 1:30 p.m. and again on Good Friday, April 3 at 10 a.m.
The open-air production brings to life the story of Jesus’ Passion, Death and Resurrection in an immersive setting.
The performances will be held at Catholic Regional College, 380 Sydenham Road, Sydenham. Entry and parking are available via Gate 5, with ample space for spectators to sit or bring their own folding chairs.
Free and open to all, the event has been part of Melbourne’s cultural and spiritual calendar since 1998, when a group of volunteers first staged the production.
Supported by the LaManna family, it has grown into one of the city’s most significant community performances.
More than a theatrical production, the Melbourne Passion Play is designed as a reflective experience, guiding audiences through the key moments of Holy Week, from Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem to the trial, crucifixion and hope of the Resurrection.
The open setting allows the audience to move with the cast, creating a sense of closeness to the events.
The production is made possible by volunteers who take on a wide range of roles, both on stage and behind the scenes, from principal characters to crowd scenes, costumes, set design and organisation.
No acting experience is required, and each year people of all ages join the cast.
Attendees are encouraged to bring folding chairs, mats or blankets for comfort. As the event is held outdoors, arriving early is recommended, along with sun protection, water and hats.
