The inaugural Yarra Valley Wine and Food Festival saw both small boutique wineries and bigger names come together at one location in a celebration of the region’s excellence.
Set amongst the vines of Rochford Wines and overlooking the rolling hills and picturesque surrounds, the two-day event showcased the Yarra Valley’s finest wine, food and local produce, as well as locally brewed cider and beer.
The opening day featured live music and entertainment, perfect for an afternoon sip, while those looking for a more interactive experience enjoyed the cooking demonstrations and master classes, and everyone took pleasure in a taste of the region’s top dishes.
On the other hand, Sunday’s schedule made for the perfect family day out, as kids’ cooking demonstrations took centre stage, along with a jocular pantomime show, circus performances and roving entertainers.
The festival was announced by the Andrews Labor Government last December, while the Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren joined Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes and event organisers to mark its launch with a grape stomp at Parliament.
“There’s no place quite like the Yarra Valley for the fine food and wine so many of us enjoy,” Mr Eren said.
“This is a great opportunity for the region to showcase its wonderful strengths.”
The government secured the event with $30,000 from the regional events grant, which assists regional Victoria in staging the biggest and best events and boosts business and trading in rural towns.
“The big events that attract visitors to regional Victoria are a key driver of local economies,” Ms Symes affirmed.
“They provide jobs for locals, and that keeps communities strong.”
Festival General Manger, Ross Stevens, said that following such a great success this year, the Yarra Valley Wine and Food Festival will return again in 2018.
