The event was organised in conjunction with the Italian Consulate, Invictus Games Sydney, Clubs NSW, Five Dock RSL Sub-Branch and City of Canada Bay Council.
The night was a huge success, with Club Five Dock RSL President Robert Ridge welcoming all guests.
“The Club and Sub-Branch have had a close connection with veteran welfare for a very long time and having the opportunity to work with Invictus, in particular the Italian national team, due to our long connection with the Australian Italian community in our local area [sic],” he said.
Dignitaries present included Consul General Arturo Arcano, Senator of the Republic of Italy, The Hon. Dr Francesco Giacobbe OAM, PhD, Member for Drummoyne John Sidoti, Invictus Games Chairman Peter Leahy AC, Invictus Games CEO Patrick Kidd OBE and more.
Felice Montrone, Advisory Board Member at Multicultural NSW and Chairman of the Father Atanasio Gonelli Charitable Fund, has also welcomed the Italian National Invictus Team to Sydney.
“I'm proud and honoured to welcome to Sydney the Italian National Invictus Team,” he said in a statement online.
“Three of the team members are from the Italian region where I was born, Puglia, from the cities of Taranto, Ostuni and Martina Franca.
“The Italian team has already won four medals at the Invictus Games, with more medals in the offering until the games close on Saturday, October 27.
“The Italian Australian community shares my best wishes for the Italian National Invictus Team.”
While the individuals who take part in the Invictus Games are certainly competitive, the games are unique in that there is no recorded medal tally for each nation.
The medals are intended to symbolise the achievements in personal growth that the ex-servicemen and women have accomplished.
Last month Club Five Dock RSL also held its Presidents Black Tie, at which $61,000 was donated to the Invictus Games Sydney and the Club pledged its continual support to the community.
