The number of dogs and other pets abandoned along roads by heartless owners increases in the summer holiday season.

“We are thinking of proposing changes to the road-safety bill that will be debated in parliament to stiffen the punishment for those who abandon pets on the road, going as far as withdrawing or suspending their driving licence,” League leader Salvini said in a question-time session in the Senate.

“In addition to being an act of absolute barbarism and incivility, it is also a danger to (other) people travelling.

“So (we may have) the suspension or even withdrawal of the driving licence of those who abandon animals on the road.

“I hope that this is what is needed to demonstrate that it must be a holiday for all.”
