Founded in Melbourne in February 1992, the club was created as a gathering place for emigrants from Acquaro, a small town in the province of Vibo Valentia, Calabria, with the goal of helping them stay connected to their roots and culture.
Just a few months after its founding, the club began accepting memberships. On August 15 of that same year, it hosted its very first event to celebrate the feast of San Rocco, drawing more than 600 attendees. The turnout exceeded all expectations, filling the founders with pride.
Over the years, the club grew into a cherished community hub, consistently organising events, first at its original location in Northcote and now in the parish hall of St Joseph’s Church in Reservoir.
I spoke with the club’s current president, Salvatore Zangari, one of the founding members who has held the presidency for an impressive 14 consecutive years. “We have a great committee, and everyone works hard,” he said, “I never hold back either. Even though my wife is unwell, I find it difficult to step away from the club.”
The evening’s menu featured a classic Italian antipasto, lasagna, roast beef, grilled vegetables, dessert and a toast to mark this special milestone.
The joyful atmosphere was further enhanced by live entertainment from Elvira Andreoli and The Rustica Project as 180 guests filled the hall adorned with green, white and red balloons.
“My whole family is here tonight,” Zangari shared. “My children and grandchildren came, and even my two daughters-in-law were ‘recruited’ as floor managers, helping with meal service and making sure everyone was enjoying themselves.”
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, there was a buzz of excitement and a hint of tension as the women of the committee, dressed in elegant evening gowns, deftly managed the cooking.
Meanwhile, the men lined up to carry dishes to the tables, ensuring smooth service. The president also made a point to thank the committee for their dedication. “We work together as a team,” he said, “And while occasionally there may be criticism, one thing remains constant: our shared love for this club.”
