Summer signing Mateo Retegui headed Atalanta into the lead in the 26th minute thanks to a cross from Davide Zappacosta. Retegui’s header clipped the underside of the crossbar on the way in.
Che Adams set up Ivan Ilic for the equaliser five minutes later with a clever through ball while on the turn. Ilic finished it off by chipping the oncoming Marco Carnesecchi in the Atalanta goal.
Adams then scored a goal of his own at the start of the second half when Zappacosta’s initial shot was parried straight into his path by Carnesecchi.
Atalanta were awarded a late penalty, but Mario Pasalic saw his spot kick saved by goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.
